New ride-sharing systems have made e-scooters easily accessible. Motorized kick scooters are used in law enforcement, security patrolling and leisure. Different jurisdictions have their own rules regulating electric kick scooter use on public roads and footways. This segment of the micro-mobility market made large inroads in 2018, with numerous dockless e-scooters appearing in major cities worldwide, sometimes in controversial and contentious unsanctioned roll-outs, such as in San Francisco.
